The Democratic Road Back PAC, established in 2003 by Delegate Mitch Van Yahres, aims to build the Democratic Party from the ground up by attracting, supporting and electing well-qualified candidates in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
PAC Contributions from 2003 – 2013
Since 2003, the PAC has contributed over $77,000 dollars to twenty-seven Democratic campaigns over six election cycles for local and state offices representing Charlottesville and/or Albemarle County. The majority of the supported candidates have been successfully elected. They include candidates for State Senate (3), House of Delegates (5), Albemarle County Board of Supervisors (10), Charlottesville City Council (8) and Charlottesville Commissioner of Revenue (1).
In addition to multiple fundraising events (e.g., The 2009 Inaugural Ball), the PAC has organized four half-day campaign training sessions for individuals from the Charlottesville/ Albemarle community who are considering running for office as Democrats. These have been well-attended, attracting both potential candidates and future campaign staffers, and have featured speakers with extensive experience and expertise in conducting both local and state campaigns.
Consistent with its mission, the PAC is now leading a comprehensive program of monthly seminars and presentations on topics of relevance to potential candidates for local and district offices, campaign staff, and applicants for public boards and commissions. These sessions consist of two tracks, the Understanding Government track and the Campaign Training Track. The program is open to any local Democrat who is registered to vote, identifies with the principles of the Democratic Party and supports its candidates, and who wishes to explore and develop their personal potential for political leadership within the Democratic Party.
Through this program, aspiring political candidates, future campaign staffers and emerging party leaders will gain the knowledge and leadership skills they need to achieve their goals within the Democratic Party. The PAC has changed its name to The Democratic Road Forward PAC to reflect its new direction as an educational resource for future candidates and political leaders.
